King Kong (2005)
Starring Naomi Watts, Adrien Brody, Jack Black
Adapted by Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens and Peter Jackson, from the story by Merian C. Cooper and Edgar Wallace
Directed by Peter Jackson
The moviest movie in the history of moviedom. From the tension building when are we gonna see the monkey first hour to Kong fighting dinosaurs to skating across the ice of New York, it's all very beautiful. Colonialist (n.b. not racist), which makes it less beautiful. Absurd, too, which makes it more beautiful. With respect to the animators, it's Watts who gives the ape his personality: she implies the action with her reaction. Everyone cries at the end. Catharsis is achieved.
